History
The Belle Mont Mansion was built in Tuscumbia, Alabama between 1828 and 1832 for Virginian-native Dr. Alexander W. Mitchell. Mitchell was one of the first slaveholders and mass-planters in the area. In 1833, Mitchell sold the mansion to Isaac Winston, also a Virginia native. The Winston family continued to own the 1,680-acre property up until 1941. Forty-two years later in 1983, the house plus 33-acres were donated to the Alabama Historical Commission. Today, the Belle Mont Mansion is being restored, and it runs as a historic house museum.
