History
Twin Mound, located in Douglas County, Kansas, was named for its two hills that lie in the area’s landscape. Henry Hiatt, who was born in Dublin, Indiana in 1816, moved out to the Kansas Territory with his wife and five children in 1856, eventually settling in Bloomington. For a short while after arriving in Bloomington, Hiatt and two other men operated a saw mill. However, within a year, Hiatt left the business and moved his family seven miles southwest of the town.
When he arrived in the area, he founded Twin Mound, inspired by the two identical hills in the area. While Hiatt never explained why he left Bloomington, he hated the power of the organized church system in America. He much preferred Confucius’ version of the Golden Rule, and it was likely he just didn’t like the imposing churches in Bloomington. In many ways, Hiatt was an anarchist. In 1900, he passed away and was buried in a homemade coffin in the Twin Mound Cemetery. The cemetery was established in 1858, when his first wife died.
It is unknown why Twin Mound was abandoned, though it probably had something to do with its small scale and even smaller population.
