History

Haunting

The Albertville Public Library was constructed atop land that was formerly the site of a house. The residence was demolished in the early 1900s. While no one has died on the site and the current building was never a house, it is speculated that the spirits of the former owners haunt the area, angry that their home was torn down. Staff and volunteers of the Albertville Public Library have claimed the elevator operates by itself without anyone inside and faucets turn on and off on their own accord. The activity is most prevalent in the early morning when the first employee comes to work. In 2010, the library was damaged by an EF3 tornado that ravaged Albertville. Claims of paranormal occurrences have seemingly ceased since then.

Ending the Rumors

Librarians at the Albertville Public Library claim the story of the haunting started as a joke and snowballed into an urban legend following a brief news spot. Paranormal claims began to appear on sites such as The Shadowlands, giving further credence to speculations of Albertville Public Library being haunted. Local papers ran articles, the Enclopedia Brittanica Blog listed it as a hauted library, and the story was featured in Haunted North Alabama by Jessica Penot. Penot said about the tale, “The fact that a legend surrounds a location like the library only underlines its importance in the community. Places that are central to communities are often the first to have ghost stories spread about them. Because people love these places, the stories spread more quickly.”
