History

Warning: This story contains particularly dark details that may be upsetting to readers.

Stories of the haunted girls’ locker room are widespread throughout Anniston High School. The older high schoolers try to scare the freshmen with the story, warning them never to go into the locker room by themselves. While the details vary from person to person, the main points are always the same. Whether or not the story is true or urban legend remains uncertain.

The Story

In 2001, an unidentified female student who was typically the first to change for PE and the first to leave and change back was running uncharacteristically late with her best friend. It was the last period of the day and the pair hurried to make the bus, rushing to get ready in two minutes instead of their usual five. Realizing their ride would be there soon, the girls scrambled out of the locker room and joined the other students waiting in the gym. When the bell rang, the girl remembered she had left her purse in her locker. She did not want to risk leaving it, as it contained all of her money. Her best friend offered to go with her, but the girl instructed her to catch the bus and tell the driver to hold it until she got on.

The girl retrieved her purse and closed the locker door. She heard someone entering the room. Assuming it to be her gym teacher, she called out, “Coach! Coach! It’s me. I left my purse. Please don’t lock the door just yet!” There was no reply, only footsteps drawing nearer. The girl grew more frightened as she heard loud, heavy breathing. She panicked, dropped her purse, and tried to get away, but was grabbed from behind by an imposing man. He ripped her clothing and instructed her to be quiet. In the struggle, he tried to strangle her, making it night impossible for her to kick and scream. In one last desperate attempt, the girl pulled the lockers down on her attacker, killing him.

She ran out of the locker rooms to the bus stop, only to find the bus had left. She called her mother for a ride. Her mother called the police after hearing her daughter’s terrifying encounter. When the scene was investigated, officers only found fallen lockers, the girl’s purse, and a large pool of blood. The body of the assailant was nowhere to be found. The girl was astonished, certain the man was dead, especially given his considerable blood loss. The girl and her family moved, as she was too traumatized to return to the site where she had been raped and strangled.

Haunting

Though the man was never located, there have been reports of his ghost lurking in the locker rooms, waiting for a lone girl so he may get his revenge. Many students did not believe the ghost stories until history eerily repeated itself. A girl in band was getting dressed to play at a football game. She was alone in the locker room, forgotten; the band did not notice she was missing. After the game, they found the girl in the parking lot, crying. Her clothes were torn and stained with blood. She moved away without ever having told her story.

Girls in the locker room have heard disembodied encroaching footsteps, sourceless loud breathing, and creaking doors. Lockers close on their own. Cold spots have been reported.
