History
Numerous urban legends and ghost stories are tied to Bear Creek Swamp. Phantom vehicles have been seen speeding down the adjacent road, only to disappear into the darkness of night. Visitors have reported odd sourceless lights, floating orbs, and peculiar sounds in the area. Apparitions of Civil War soldiers, Creek Indians, and early white settlers have been sighted near the swamp. A four-foot-tall apparition pops out in front of cars. The spirit of a woman can be summoned to look for her lost child when you repeat the phrase, “We have your baby,” three times.
In November 2014, Autauga County Sheriff’s Office recovered twenty-one porcelain dolls attached to bamboo states floating in the swap as a makeshift “graveyard” near County Road 3. Their hair had been painted white. It was likely a Halloween prank.
The area is said to be populated by an “abnormally high amount” of lizards and snakes.
